Former Indian cricketer and ex-national selector Salil Ankola has reportedly been admitted to a rehabilitation and mental healthcare centre near Pune while undergoing treatment for severe depression. According to news reports, Ankola had been struggling emotionally since the death of his mother in October 2024, an event that deeply affected his mental well-being.
His wife, Ria, revealed that the former fast bowler chose to seek professional help after experiencing emotional breakdowns and recurring health issues. She shared that he had been “very upset” and found it difficult to process the grief of losing his mother.

"Yes, Salil was suffering from depression, and hence a couple of weeks ago, he got himself admitted to a mental health care centre near Pune. Salil was very upset ever since he lost his mother in October 2024, and was unable to process her passing away. So, recently, when he saw himself breaking down and falling sick very often, he chose to get himself treated in a good place and in a peaceful environment," Ria told the Times of India.
The development has sparked wider conversations around depression, grief, and mental health awareness, especially among athletes and public figures who often face emotional struggles away from the spotlight.

Grief and depression: When emotional pain becomes overwhelming
Mental health experts say prolonged grief can sometimes trigger major depressive episodes, particularly when emotional trauma remains unresolved. Depression is more than temporary sadness - it affects sleep, appetite, energy levels, physical health, relationships, and daily functioning. A few common symptoms include:
- Persistent sadness or hopelessness
- Fatigue and low energy
- Loss of motivation
- Social withdrawal
- Sleep disturbances
- Anxiety or emotional numbness
- Frequent illness or physical exhaustion
Doctors say seeking help early is one of the most important steps toward recovery. Ankola’s decision to voluntarily enter a rehabilitation and mental healthcare facility has been widely viewed as a positive and courageous move.
Mental health struggles in athletes often go unnoticed
Professional athletes frequently experience intense psychological pressure linked to performance, injuries, career uncertainty, public scrutiny, and personal loss. Experts note that many former sportspersons struggle silently because mental health challenges are still heavily stigmatized in competitive environments.
Salil Ankola had previously battled alcohol addiction and reportedly underwent rehabilitation years ago. Mental health specialists say individuals with past addiction struggles may become more emotionally vulnerable during periods of grief, stress, or isolation.
His story also highlights how mental health recovery is not linear. Emotional setbacks can happen even years after overcoming earlier challenges.
Why seeking professional help matters
Psychiatrists and therapists emphasize that depression is a medical condition, not a personal weakness. Treatment may include therapy, counselling, medication, structured rehabilitation programs, exercise, mindfulness practices, and strong family support systems. According to Ria, the former cricketer is now recovering well, exercising regularly, and receiving strong support from his family and the cricket fraternity.
Experts say family support plays a critical role in mental health recovery. Open conversations, emotional reassurance, and encouraging professional treatment can significantly improve outcomes for people experiencing depression or emotional burnout.
Breaking the stigma around mental health
The conversation around mental health in sports has grown globally in recent years, with many athletes speaking openly about depression, anxiety, burnout, and emotional exhaustion. Health experts believe such discussions are essential in reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek help without shame.
Salil’s situation serves as a reminder that depression can affect anyone - regardless of fame, success, or public image. Mental health professionals continue to urge people experiencing emotional distress to prioritize treatment, support, and self-care before reaching a crisis point.
